Dr Nichola Ashby is an influential nurse leader, researcher, and policy advisor whose career has made a lasting impact on the global nursing workforce. Formerly Deputy Chief Nurse at the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) and now serving as a Strategic Advisor and member of the ICN Global Workforce Research Council, she has led initiatives that advance professional standards, workforce sustainability, and research-led innovation across the nursing profession.

Dr Ashby’s work spans academic and policy spheres, combining her clinical background with expertise in workforce analytics, education, and leadership. At the RCN, she spearheaded programmes to support clinical excellence, diversity in leadership, and evidence-based decision-making in workforce planning. Her contributions continue to shape international research collaborations and strategic frameworks for nursing leadership.

She is a passionate advocate for nurses’ voices in policymaking and for embedding equality and inclusion in all levels of healthcare leadership. Dr Ashby’s scholarship and advocacy have earned her recognition as one of the UK’s most thoughtful and influential nursing strategists.
